Sumi Gaeshi

Sumi-gaeshi - Corner Reversal

Sumi-gaeshi is performed as in the above technique mainly. This is similar to the techniques performance in Nage-no-kata. However, in the new syllabus we are asked to look at two different versions - so we have included a further version. We will look at five different versions, however.

1. As in the above video. The tori's foot on the side of the tsurite is placed inside the top of uke's opposite leg. Drop as you would a tomoe-nage, lifting with the foot to throw to the corner.

2. A light-weight version of 1. Tori lifts before dropping, thus givingv much more height to the technique.

3. Possibly Obi-sumi-gaeshi. The hands are different to 1, with the tsurite coming over the uke and taking grip of the ukes obi (belt) for much more pull. In this version, tori can follow the technique through with a roll to land in tate-shiho-gatame.

4. Attacking from the side, swinging into the uke - leg is like the above video, the drop like the below video.

5. The most different to 1. Attacking from the side as in 4, but the knee is inside the uke to give much more lift - this is seen in the below video.

In this video uke is given the opportunity to breakfall properly - obviously in shiai the hold would be much tighter and positon after the throw closer.
