Kuzure Tate Shiho Gatame

Kuzure-tate-shiho-gatame - Broken Lengthwise Four Quarters

Kuzure-tate-shiho-gatame

Almost identical to Tate-shiho-gatame, with one arm, sitting astride your partner, on their belly and laying your weight upon them. Hold their arm straight and 'cuddle' the arm, without holding your opponents head.

Often, mistakenly, the difference between a classic Tate-shiho-gatame and a Kuzure-tate-shiho-gatame is assumed as Hon Tate Shiho Gatame holding both arms, Kuzure holding one; as shown here:

Tate-shiho-gatame

This hold can also be executed with both of your feet wrapped under your opponents knees and spreading. This is a spinal lock, however, and is no longer allowed in shiai.
