Kata Gatame

Kata-gatame - Shoulder Hold

Kata-gatame

There are two recognised versions of this technique, each differing only slightly from one another.

1. 'Free Arm'.
In this version, the tori (if on the right side of the uki) places his right knee into the side of their opponent, usually around or slightly above the belt area. The left leg will be used, stretched out to apply pressure. The uki's right arm is placed across their face, and the tori traps the arm their with their own head, wrapping both arms around the arm and head. Immense pressure can then be added to the uki's neck and shoulder, usually leading to a submission (indeed, the only osae-komi waza in Katame-no-kata that has an immediate submission).

2. Trapped Arm.
In this version the tori approaches the technique as above, but instead traps the uki's right hand across the left side of the uki's face creating a triangle with the uki's arm.

This technique can also be executed with the legs of the tori as in Kesa-gatame. This is considered by some as Kuzure-kata-gatame, although rarely.
